Humans not machines

As some of you may know, maybe because you have read my bio , I am originally an educationalist. My subject area is the brain and how people learn skills and develop the ability to function independently. I still spend time in schools helping staff understand what happens in the brain as children grow, it’s a cool aspect to my work which has brought much enjoyment over the years.

One ...

Netflix numpties!!!

I can scarcely believe it, I hear Netflix are planning to trial pre and post roll video ads. Not only can I not believe it but I am quite irritated at the step backwards which appears to be on the horizon.

Let’s look at this logically for a moment.

Over the past two editions of this blog I have commented on the shift from traditional TV viewing habits to the mobile on-demand ...

The Long and Winding Road : TV schedule ? Yeah, right!

TV schedule? Yeah, right!

I was made to feel very old and crumbly this weekend by my teenage son, perhaps not the worst thing a teenage son can do to a parent, I grant you, but it made me think. This past weekend was a holiday weekend whichever side of the ‘pond’ you were on. In the USA it was Memorial weekend and in the UK it was a ‘Bank Holiday’ weekend. ...

What a switch off!!!

For several years the trend to ditch terrestrial and cable based tv has been growing . Today the trend has become almost an epidemic with more Americans finding their video based entertainment through less conventional channels. I say ‘less conventional’ but for how long? The unconventional is fast becoming the norm, customer choice is no longer having plenty of channels to choose from a limited number of providers ...

Conscious uncoupling…for a day

The news that Chris Martin , he of Coldplay , and Gwyneth Paltrow, she of Hollywood had ‘consciously uncoupled’ for a year before they told the world hardly met with much interest from me. What happened though was a train of thought emerged as I pondered the immense pit of irrelevent news stories we are fed each day. I looked at my own family as they sat immersed ...

A ‘responsive’ Scottish Calvinist

Strange title for a weekly ramble? Well yes, but there is a reason. This week the fabled BBC launched a new ‘responsive’ web presence to reflect the way we consume our digital media today. Way back in 1922 , when the British Broadcasting Company Ltd. was formed by Royal Charter, the focus was on controlling the explosion in the latest technological breakthrough, namely radio. When a similar expansion ...

The Long and Winding Road : ‘Never mind the quality, feel the width!’

Never mind the quality, feel the width!

I have a particular problem with restaurant recommendations which start with a description of how much food is served as opposed to whether the food was any good. This is one of my many pet peeves but perhaps the one which gets me most exercised when I get duped into paying over the odds for microwaved, packet, frozen food masquerading under the guise of ‘home ...

Harper Lee shows the way to authenticity…

‘To kill a mockingbird’ is one of the most powerful and widely read books of modern times , dealing with a difficult issue with refinement and understatement. So powerful was the story, so compelling was the narrative that some 50 or more years after it’s publication it still finds it’s way onto the examination reading lists in several countries. Rarely has there been a more ...

Marty McFly and all that…

According to the story in Back to the Future, we should now be enjoying flying cars and hover boards. Our perceptions of future lifestyles and living conditions often set technical challenges more than they reflect reality however we may not be too far away from these predictions.

If you have the specific metal alloy surfaces you can operate a hover board in 2015 but at this point ...
