As most of the developed world is struggling with austerity, thereby underlining the fact that we are not as developed as we would like to believe, business has downsized.
Take a look around any local community and you will see previously large ventures being re-invented as smaller niche ventures with the customer in mind.
Why? Well , it’s cheaper to do things on a small scale than it is on a big scale, generally speaking. A few years ago we all would rush down to Target or Costco to order a whoppingly big, obnoxious birthday cake for whomever in our family we wanted to help induce diabetes…. oh, the sugar-frosting alone would sink a battle ship! In the world of ‘volume trumps quality’ the only acceptable demonstration of birthday love is to provide a slab cake the size of a pillow and insulin.
Austerity has arrived and whether we need to be quite so austere in our thinking remains to be seen but the birthday cake business has all but faded and in it’s place comes the kitchen table entrepreneurs of the ‘cup cake’ underground , all vying for ‘best in show’ prizes. It is almost the new affiliate marketing, where with only a small investment you can turn your life around by capturing a large commercial deal supplying cup cakes on demand… all from your kitchen table.
Surely it is only a matter of time before we read of somebody breaking the million dollar a year barrier just from making cupcakes and selling them to local food outlets and children’s party suppliers. Logic then dictates that it is also only a matter of time before we see social media and on-line marketing spreading the word…… imagine my delight when I came across this gem! Yes , she may just be as mad as a box of frogs….. or maybe she is baking up a wonderful practical joke?
Then again, you might run into these gals and to be honest, if their cupcakes are as entertaining and engaging as their video …maybe cupcakes really can constitute content!
